Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from excessive levels of hand arm and whole body vibration within the workplace under the provisions of the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005. People operating handheld power tools or driving mobile machines MHE within the workplace, can suffer a range of ill health effects such as vibration white finger, disabling hand arm symptoms and back issues. A Vibration at Work risk assessment is required, if any employee is likely to be exposed to daily hand arm or whole body levels at or above the A8 exposure action value shown in the table below:
|Whole-Body Vibration Daily Exposure (8-Hour Reference Period)||Hand-Arm Vibration Daily Exposure (8 Hour Reference Period)|
|Below the Exposure Action Value||<0.5ms⁻²||<2.5ms⁻²|
|Exposure Action Values (EAV)||0.5ms⁻²||2.5ms⁻²|
|Exposure Limit Value (ELV)||1.15ms⁻²||5.0ms⁻²|
